27 docs, lawyers in race to win party tickets

CHATTOGRAM: Along with other professionals, at least 27 physicians and lawyers collected forms for securing nomination from Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to contest in the 11th parliamentary elections from Chattogram.

Sources said the intended candidates have been carrying out their best lobby to get nomination from the respective party. 

Number of the intended candidates from the professions marked rise this year compared to the previous occasions, they said.

Former Minister and AL Chattogram city unit Vice President and Incumbent lawmaker Dr Afsarul Ameen collected form for Chattogram-10 (Double Mooring-Halishahar) constituency while Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Chattogram former President Dr Sheikh Shafiul Azam and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad Central Committee Organising Secretary Dr ANM Minhazur Rahman for Chattogram-15 (Satkania-Lohagara), BMA Central Committee Joint Secretary Dr Jamal Uddin Chowdhury for Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) and city unit AL Health and Population Affairs Secretary and BMA Chattogram General Secretary Dr Faisal Iqbal Chowdhury for Chattogram-7 (Rangunia) constituency.      

Among the BNP leaders, city BNP President and former Chhatra Dal leader Dr Shahadat Hossain is an aspirant from Chattogram-9 (Kotwali-Bakolia) constituency while BNP-backed Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) Chattogram former President Dr Khurshid Jamil Chowdhury from Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari), Dr Mohsin Jillur Karim from Chattogram-14 (Chandanaish) and Dr Fawaz Shuvo from Chattogram-5 (Hathazari) constituency.

Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), Chattogram former President Dr Sheikh Shafiul Azam said the nomination of medical professionals will help implementation of the government’s plans to provide better healthcare services to the people.

“If I nominated and elected, I will work for ensuring medication services for marginal people,” said Dr Shafiul.

On the other hand, at least 18 lawyers including public prosecutors (PP) collected nomination forms to vie for the upcoming elections from the AL and BNP.

Chattogram city AL vice-president Advocate Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury Babul collected nomination forms to contest from Chattogram-9 (Kotwali-Bakolia) and Chattogram-5 (Hathazari) constituencies.

Lawyers Basanti Prava Palit and Masudul Alam also collected forms from AL for the Hathazari constituency. AL Central Organising Secretary and late AL leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury’s son Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel, Swechchhasebok League city unit Convener Jiauddin Ahmed, AL member and Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 PP MA Naser collected forms from the Kotwali-Bakolia constituency.

Chattogram District PP AKM Sirajul Islam Chowdhury and Advocate Kamrun Nahar collected forms for Chattogram-15 (Satkania-Lohagar) constituency.

Besides, lawyer Abdur Rashid is aspirant from Chattogram-12 (Patiya) constituency while Mujibul Hoque from Chattogram-16 (Banshkhali) and Assistant Attorney General Masud Alam Chowdhury from Chattogram-14 (Chandanish) constituency.

Among the aspirants from BNP, former Minister Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, his son barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin and former BNP leader Syed Wahidul Alam’s daughter Barrister Shakila Farzana collected forms for Chattogram-5 (Hathazari) constituency.

Foysal Mahmud Foyeze, Abdul Hamid and Rezaul Karim are aspirants for contesting from Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari), Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) and Chattogram-7 (Rangunia) constituencies respectively.

Senior lawyer and AL leader Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury Babul told the daily sun that as the parliament is a law making place priority should be given to lawyers in choosing candidate by the party.

“It is very positive sign that many lawyers came forward to be member of the parliament. But, everybody will have to accept the party decision,” he said.
