Police on Thursday foiled a bid of the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) to besiege the office of the Election Commission (EC) in the capital by attacking a procession leaving its 50 leaders and activists injured.

LDA leaders alleged that police had carried out an attack on their procession when it reached at SAARC Fountain in Karwan Bazar. The procession was proceeding towards the Election Commission office in a bid to lay seige it at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Fifty LDA leaders and activists, including Saiful Huq, Shah Alam, Jonayed Saqui and Rajekuzzaman Ratan, were injured during the attack, they alleged.

Protesting police attack, LDA announced a demonstration programme across the country for Saturday and demanded punishment to the police officials.

Before the procession, LDA leaders and activists held a rally in front of the National Press Club with LDA coordinator Saiful Huq in the chair.

While addressing the rally, the alliance leaders alleged that the incumbent government and the EC are trying to hold another ‘lopsided’ election like that of January 5, 2014, but they warned against holding such election.

LDA leaders also demanded dissolution of current parliament, resignation of the government, formation of an election-time government and reconstitution of the EC for creating an atmosphere for holding a free and fair election.
