Detective police arrested seven members of a gang of carjackers and recovered 10 vehicles from Mirpur, Demra and Shyampur of the capital on Wednesday, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday.

A team of sleuths (west division) of the DMP arrested Lokman Hossain, 25, Niamul Sharif, 25, Sheikh Jamal, 22,  Abdur Rashid Mridha, 20, Rabbi Sikder, 19, Shah Alam, 52, and Mahbub Sikder, 47, in between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm and recovered eight motorcycles, a private car and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw.

They have long been involved in the crime. They sold the vehicles with the help of a syndicate who forged signatures and stamps of BRTA.

Meanwhile, police arrested five with a stolen private car from Chattogram city and district on Thursday.

The arrestees were identified as Md Jahed Hossain, 21, Md Mohiuddin, 22, Rabbbi Hasan Alauddin, 18, Md Shahbuddin, 27, and Md Salauddin Tarek, 20.

Of them, Tarek is the ringleader of the snatcher’s gang.  Sources said the private car driver Md Aslam picked a passenger for Chakoria upazila in Cox’s Bazar district from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Monday.

As the driver Aslam was waiting for new passenger on his return trip to Dhaka after dropping the passenger, all the snatchers without Salauddin boarded on the car from the port city’s AK Khan Morr area at around 10:45pm on the following day.  The snatchers took key of the vehicle from the driver at gunpoint and gave a good beating after going to few kilometers.   He was kept on the passenger seat after tying his legs and mouth.

Later, one of the snatchers drove the vehicle and dropped the driver in the city’s Double-mooring area after taking his mobile phone and Tk 6,000 at around 2:30am on Wednesday.

Inspector (Investigation) Jahir Hossain of the concerned Double-mooring police station said they conducted drives in different areas of the city and district after the victim lodged complaints in this connection.
