Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday said Bangladesh has tremendous prospect to be the leader of global apparel industry. It is currently the second largest exporter of garments in the world.
The country is proceeding towards the direction by adopting the right policy, strategy and planning, she said.The Speaker made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of three exhibitions on Dyes-Chemical, Yarn –Fabrics and textile technology at the capital’s International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB).
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said textiles and RMG are playing a vital role in the growth of economy, employment generation, skill development and improving the living standard of people by reduction of poverty.
“Women empowerment is highly significant as 80 percent out of 4.4 million women are working in the apparel sector.”
The Speaker said RMG contributes around 15 percent in the country’s GDP. The sector, at present, generates more export earnings than $30 billion. It’s also marching ahead with goal achieved export earnings$60 billion in the near future. In order for us to be able to reach the target, it is important to give attention, nurture and support the domestic supply chain as backward linkage industries--- spinning, waving, knitting, fabric processing, dyeing and accessories.
“We must not only depend on important fabrics, but also build the capacity to produce locally to reduce dependency on important fabrics,” Sharmin Chaudhury said.
CEMS Global-USA and Asia Pacific organised the four-day long mega event.State Minister for Textiles and Jute Mirza Azam, MP, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) president Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Sringla, Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) President Rudra Chatterjee, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA), Vice President Mohammed Nasir and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Vice President Fazlee Shameem Ehsan were present as special guests.
CEMS Global President Meherul N Islam chaired the occasion.
