Tamim, Mushfiq to feature in Afghanistan T20 League

Big starts picked up as Icons

Bangladesh’s ace opener Tamim Iqbal and keeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim will be featured in Nangarhar’s team in the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League from October 5 to 21 in the UAE.

At least 34 overseas players are set to be part of the maiden edition of the tournament, to be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The draft was held on Monday. The five franchises are Paktia, Kabul, Balkh, Nangarhar and Kandahar.

Tamim was in diamond category of the players’ draft and Mushfiqur was pitted in silver category. Tamim’s base price was 63 lakh taka whereas his compatriot Mushfiqur’s base price was locked at 25 lakh taka.

In the auction, the other Bangladeshi cricketers were Mohammad Ashraful, Sabbir Rahman, Junayed Siddiqui, Taskin Ahmed, Mohammad Saifuddin and ABul Hasan Raju. However, apart from Tamim and Mushfiq, the rest of the Bangladeshi players were remained unsold.

Caribbean star player Andre Russel will be the Icon player of Nangarhar in the new-look T20 tournament.

Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, West Indies’ Chris Gayle and New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum were among the big names snapped up by franchises in the draft.

Afridi was picked up by Paktia, Gayle joined Balkh, and McCullum Kandahar, while the fifth team, Kabul, had national-team superstar Rashid Khan as their biggest signing.

Each team had to select between 17 and 20 players, with five overseas and one Associate player compulsorily in the squad.

Players from England (Ravi Bopara, Sam Billings, Chris Jordan, Luke Wright, Laurie Evans, Tymal Mills), New Zealand (Luke Ronchi, Colin Munro, Mitchell McClenaghan), Australia (Ben Cutting, Ben Laughlin), Pakistan (Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanveer, Mohammad Irfan, Faheem Ashraf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez), South Africa (Colin Ingram, Wayne Parnell, Cameron Delport), Sri Lanka (Thisara Perera) and Ireland (Paul Stirling) will feature in the tournament, reports Icc-cricket.com.

The Associate nations are represented by Ryan ten Doeschate of the Netherlands, Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane, local boy Mohammad Naveed and Scottish batsman Calum McLeod.

As for the Afghan national heroes, Mohammad Shahzad went to Paktia, Mujeeb Ur Rahman to Nangarhar, Mohammad Nabi to Balkh and Asghar Afghan to Kandahar.
