A BNP delegation met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday and requested him for immediate hospitalisation of party chairperson Khaleda Zia to the capital’s United Hospital.
A 10-member delegation led by party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met the home minister at his secretariat office and made the appeal.After the meeting, the home minister told journalists that the BNP delegation said that ailing Khaleda Zia needs treatment at a specialised hospital.
This time also they preferred the United Hospital, but they mentioned about Apollo Hospital. We told them all necessary measures will be taken in line with the jail code.”
“The best treatment of the country is done at government hospitals. Her health was regularly checked in the prison. However, after the request of the BNP leaders, a medical board will be formed again for Khaleda Zia’s health examination” he informed.
After the meeting, Fakhrul told journalists that Begum Khaleda Zia is in prison where her health condition is deteriorating. We came to talk with the home minister in this regard.”
“We requested the minister to shift our leader to a specialised hospital. She wants to be treated at the United Hospital and we too requested him for shifting her there,” he stated.
He said: “The home minister assured that he would take steps in this regard after talking to the secretary of the respective ministry, prison authority and other officials.”Responding to a query, the BNP leader said the home minister did not mention about any date when he would take the step, but said that he would hold a meeting with the respective officials soon.
The meeting which started at 3:00pm lasted for nearly an hour and at one point Inspector General (Prisons) Syed Iftekhar Uddin was seen entering the home minister’s office.
The BNP delegation was led by its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Its other members were standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moin Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan.
BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia is staying at old Dhaka central jail in the capital’s Nazimuddin Road after she was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8 this year.
