Readymade garment workers blocked the busy Airport-Uttara road for four hours on Thursday in protest at the removal of some of their fellow workers, which hampered traffic movement and caused untold sufferings to commuters.
Around 1000 workers of Top Jeans, a factory of APS Group, and some other workers of nearby garment factories took to the road from Jashimuddin to Abdullahpur, said Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-charge Ali Hossain Khan. The blockade continued from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Thousands of commuters were held up in traffic and there were tailbacks on both sides of the road.Deputy commissioner of Uttara Zone Nabid Kamal told journalists that the situation was brought under control at around 2:30 pm.
When representatives of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA) assured them that their demands will be met on September 1, the demonstrating workers left the road, he said.
Police mediated between workers and factory owners, the police officer added.
