CHATTOGRAM: The vessel carrying three modern quay gantry cranes (QGC) for Chittagong Port berthed at a port jetty on Friday afternoon.

To ward off any accident special safety measures were ensured for berthing of the vessel ‘MV Xing Jin Cheng Hai Yang,’ said Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Member (admin) Md Zafar Alam.

The vessel arrived at Outer Anchorage of the Chittagong port with the cranes for New-mooring Container Terminal (NCT) from China on Tuesday.

The CPA took time for ensuring cautionary measures to avert any unexpected incident.

Senior pilots of the port were engaged for pilotage operation while all vessels from the 16-kilometre port channel stretching from estuary of the river Karnaphuli to the port jelly were cleared before the operation, said sources.

The Bangladesh Air Force and Civil Aviation Authority were also noticed about the issue earlier, they said.

CPA officials said it will now take few more days for offloading the cranes and one month for assembling them.

Mentionable, the port got the QGC to enhance the efficiency in its container-handling operations after around 13 years.

Three more QGC will be brought within next two months.
