Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday observed the Padma Multipurpose Bridge construction work and expressed her satisfaction over significant progress in the work.
She saw the construction work of the bridge from a helicopter during her return journey from Tungipara in Gopalganj after paying tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his mausoleum. PM’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana accompanied her. Some 750 meters of the much-awaited bridge are now visible following installation of its fifth recently. Thirty-six more spans will be installed to complete the main structure of the 6.15km long bridge, the largest one in the country.
In 2013, Bangladesh refused to take loan from any international lender to construct the bridge after the World Bank withdrew its loan amid the allegation of a corruption conspiracy.
The bridge is now being constructed with Bangladesh’s own fund of Tk 28,800 crore. It has been set to complete the main structure of the bridge in 2018.
