Tottenham claim rare ICC trophy

Tottenham were confirmed as the winners of this summer’s International Champions Cup on Saturday, hours after also kicking off their Premier League season with a victory, reports Espn FC.

Spurs’ status as ICC champions was confirmed when Inter Milan failed to beat Atletico Madrid by a wide enough margin in the final game of the friendly competition on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men beat Roma 4-1, fell to Barcelona on penalties after a 2-2 draw, and edged AC Milan 1-0 in their tour of the U.S. in July to top the table with seven points, just ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Inter on goal difference.

The ICC featured 18 of Europe’s most famous clubs — including England’s top six, Spain’s big three and giants Juventus, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain — each playing three games against each other as they prepared for their seasons, though most of the players who took part in the World Cup did not participate.

Though the ICC only represents a minor accomplishment, it’s still Spurs’ first piece of silverware since claiming another preseason title in the Barclays Asia Trophy in 2009. The club’s last proper trophy was the League Cup in 2008. Tottenham haven’t won the FA Cup since 1991, or the English league since 1961, though they did win the UEFA Cup in 1984.
