Law Minister Anisul Huq on Friday alleged that Gano Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain and likeminded people are plotting to oust the Awami League government.

The conspirators have apparently sought assistance from the United States to succeed in unseating the government ahead of the national polls, he said.

Anisul was speaking at a discussion meeting on the occasion of the National Mourning Day at Mogra High School ground in Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria.

As part of the conspiracy, they (Dr Kamal and others) recently held a meeting with the US ambassador in Dhaka, he alleged.

Like BNP, Kamal group is trying to fish in troubled waters over the recent student movement seeking road safety although the government implemented all of the demands of the agitators.

He claimed to have received a threat through SMS. “You are about to lose power. What is your exit door?”

About the threat, he said Awami League leaders are not afraid of losing power as they do politics for common people.

“We do politics for the people and we have a great heart. So, do not try to intimidate us,” he said.

Referring to the government’s bickering with the then Chief Justice SK Sinha for his controversial activities, the law minister said Dr Kamal Hossain tried to stage a judicial coup with the help of Sinha but the government foiled it.

Mogra union Awami League president Noab Mia presided over the meeting, which was attended, among others, by Akhaura municipality mayor Takzil Khalifa, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shamsuzzaman, upazila AL convener Zainal Abedin and Kasba upazila AL joint convener Rashedul Kawsar Bhuiyan.

After the recent meeting with US ambassador, Dr Kamal Hossain has come to fore of discussion again. The ruling party leaders see the meeting to be a plot against the government.

Dr Kamal Hossain and his daughter Sara Hossain also moved a writ petition with the High Court seeking to stop remand of photographer Shahidul Alam who captured snaps of student agitation, talked to a foreign media and held the government responsible for everything. The writ petition was filed by Shahidul’s wife.
