FBCCI for raising Ctg port efficiency

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) on Tuesday stressed the need for increasing the efficiency of Chittagong Port to facilitate the country’s trade and business.

Leaders of the apex trade body also emphasised on quick completion of Potenga terminal construction works and urged the government to keep a particular portion of the bay terminal for containers.

They made the observations at a meeting of FBCCI Standing Committee on Ministry of Shipping (Maritime Port) at FBCCI boardroom on Tuesday. Chairman of the committee Dr. Md. Pervez Shazzad Akter presided over the meeting.

Speakers at the meeting, however, said that the loss of businesses has been decreased in recent days due to improvement in container congestion situation. The leaders also discussed the issues like construction of Jetties and other matters.

They observed that problems regarding lighter ships have been improved a lot, but private jetties at Chittagong Sadarghat need to be constructed permanently.

They also mentioned about building few jetties in Narayanganj BIWTA will lessen the demurrage of mother vessels and will make goods loading and unloading smoother.

Dr. Shazzad in his speech urged the government for upgrading the toll road into 6 lanes for smooth transportation of the containers. He also urged the government for construction of rail line from Chittagong port to the Bay terminal.

He hoped that the container congestion situation will be improved further in coming days with sincere and concerted efforts by the Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and the Chittagong port authority.

FBCCI Vice President Md. Muntakim Ashraf also highlighted the potentials of the sea port and pointed out the activities of this committee to make it more vibrant.

FBCCI Directors Nizamuddin Rajesh, Tabarakul Tosaddek Hossain Khan Tito and Hafez Harun also spoke on the occasion. Co Chairmen of the committee  Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury,  Mahbub Chowdhury, Captain Shahed Chowdhury and  Shamsuzzaman Rasel participated in the discussion. Members of the committee also took part in the discussion.
