The month-long football extravaganza came to a close with France clinching the prestigious title of the FIFA World Cup 2018. It is for the second time that France won the world cup – the first one exactly 20 years ago against Brazil. In the final match on Sunday, it defeated Croatia 4-2 and came out victorious as a deserving team but the other finalist was no less formidable; Croatia refused to lie down until the final whistle blew.
This year’s world cup was full of unprecedented events; upsetting all calculations as to who are going to do perform how, traditionally favourite teams like Argentina and Brazil were routed much before the grand final. On the other hand, none could imagine how Croatia is going to perform but it qualified for the last encounter, defeated only in the final in its seven matches of the tournament. Croatia is a rising powerhouse of world football. The tournament also presented the world with some extraordinary football warriors: Harry Kane of England won the World Cup Golden Boot for his highest number of individual scores while the Golden Ball and the young player award went respectively to Croatia’s midfielder Luka Modric and France’s forward Kylian Mbappe. It may be mentioned that the world had to wait for 60 years to see a teenager (Mbappe) win the medal after 17 year old Pelé won the same in 1958.
In terms of the number of participating countries, the world cup football tournament is the second largest sport event in the world after the Olympic Games but it is more popular than the latter. It has a great unifying force; the tournament kept billions of football fans around the world captivated for the whole month. Bangladeshi people had always been very fond of world cup football tournament. But regrettably, this country is nowhere in the world football ranking though this game was one of the most popular games in the near past and still has a solid support base. Authorities need to take special measures to revive the lost glory of the game.
