The country witnessed the highest 11210MW of electricity on Wednesday, thanks to the rapid increase of power generation from the fast track power projects.

Earlier, the highest power generation was about 11,059 MW.

State-owned Power Development Board (PDB) director public relations Saiful Hasan Chowdhury said that Wednesday’s electricity generation was the highest so far.

About 90 percent people have now access to electricity against 47 percent in 2009, he pointed out.

According to the PDB the number of electricity consumers has also reached 2.99 crore and the overall access to electricity has been augmented to 90 percent because of the huge enhancement in power generation.

The government installed some 195,000 kilometers of electricity line in the last nine years since 2009, PDB said.

The number of power generation units has increased to 121 in 2018 from 27 in 2009,  said the PDB, adding that the total installed power generation capacity has tripled and went up to 18,753 MW from 4,942 MW during the period.

The highest power generation was recorded at 11,059 MW in 2018 while this was 3,268 MW in 2009, said the PDB statement, adding that the government has targeted to raise the power generation capacity to 24,000 MW by 2021 through adopting a master plan.

The government has been implementing the plan on short medium and long-term basis to achieve the goal and the budget for the power sector development has also been increased by 9 times from the previous period.
