CHATTOGRAM: Halda River Protection Committee, a platform of different professionals working to protect Halda, put up 11 recommendations including steps for an end to pollution for saving the river.

The committee President and Researcher Md Manzoorul Kibria put up the recommendations at a press conference at Chattogram Press Club on Friday. They came up with the recommendations after huge quantity of fishes and other aquatic lives died at the river recently.

Researcher Manzoorul, also associate professor of Zoology Department of Chittagong University and coordinator of the Halda River Research Laboratory of the university, said that the river experienced the worst form of pollution that resulted in death of huge fishes and other aquatic lives recently.

The river water got polluted severely with the wastes from industries and poultry farms following the flood caused by excessive rainfall and hilly onrush for several days before the Eid-Ul-Fir.

The pollution caused falling of level of dissolved oxygen and increase of level of ammonia in the water and resulted in death of the fishes, said Manzoorul quoting the experiments they conducted after the incident.

People are now very much concerned over the extreme pollution in the river three months after collection of record quantity of eggs of carp fishes, he said.

He held Hathazari Peaking Power Plant, Asian Paper Mill in Nandir Hat and huge  poultry farms developed in the Fateyabad, Borodighi, Chowdhury Hat and Nandir Hat, and obstruction of the Bamunshahi Khal as responsible for the recent situation in the Halda.

The researcher recommended for ensuring setting up of Effluent Treatment Plants at the industries and an end to dumping of wastes from poultry farms to Mora khal.
