Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Monju on Sunday told parliament that the government has taken an initiative to free the Buriganga River from pollution through increasing the water flow.

Bangladesh Water Development Board is implementing a project titled “Buriganga River Recovery (New Dhaleshwari-Pungli, Bongshai-Turag-Buriganga river system) project” at a cost of Tk 1,125.59 crore,” he said while responding to a scripted answer.

Under the project, the Water Development Board will increase 141 cusec water flow to the Buriganga River by bringing 245 cusec water flow from the River Jamuna during the dry season, he said.

Consequently, the water flow and navigability of the Buriganga will increase during the dry season and the intensity of pollution will also decrease, he added.

The project is scheduled to be complete by June 2020, the minister noted.

Meanwhile, Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam told Jatiya Sangsad that the government, in principle, has created 6,13,155 posts from 2009 to March, 2018 against the demand of different ministries and divisions aimed at making the administration speedy and time befitting.

“As part of the move, process is underway for creating some 52,079 more posts in different ministries and divisions of the administration,” he said in reply to a query.
