GCC polls campaign starts

The election campaign of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) formally begun on Monday after the election was stayed by the High Court for a month and a half.

The election was scheduled for May 15 before the HC imposed the stay. The Appellate Division later reviewed the High Court order and asked the Election Commission to hold the polls within June 28. The EC subsequently fixed a new date, June 26, for the election.   

Earlier, Awami League-backed candidate Jahangir Alam collected his symbol “boat” and BNP-backed Hasan Uddin Sarker collected his symbol “sheaf of paddy” from regional election commissioner Rakibuddin Mandol.

On Monday, AL candidate Jahangir Alam held a rally at Botbazar area at around 10:00 am that created a huge gridlock on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.

BNP mayoral candidate Hasan Uddin also held a discussion meeting with party leaders and activists at Auzbazar in Tongi.

Apart from the AL and BNP mayoral candidates, five other mayoral candidates, councillor candidates, and women candidates of reserve seats also started their election campaigns on Monday.

Five other GCC mayoral candidates are – Md Ruhul Amin of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Islami Front, Fazlul Haque Minar of Islami Oikkya Jote, Md Nasir Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and independent candidate Farid Ahmed.

A total of 11 lakh voters are expected to cast their vote in the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation polls of 57 general ward councillors and 19 reserve women seats.
