Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr in jail while her eldest son Tarique Rahman, also acting chairman of the party, will celebrate the Muslim festival in London.
Some of the party leaders will celebrate Eid at their respective constituencies.Khaleda Zia is now staying at old central jail on Nazimuddin road in the capital since February 8 after her conviction in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Although she got bail in the case from the Supreme Court (SC), but she did not get bail in other cases.
BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman along with his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman is staying in London in political asylum and he will celebrate Eid there.
Sources close to BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office said that her family members, including her brother Shamim Iskander and sister Selima Islam, can meet Khaleda Zia in jail on the Eid day. Party senior leaders will also try to meet her on the occasion, a party source said.
While talking to the daily sun, a senior BNP leader said that the standing committee members of the party will place floral wreaths at party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave in the morning. From there they will go to the jail gate to meet Khaleda Zia if they get permission from the authorities concerned.
While addressing a press conference recently, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain claimed that Khaleda Zia’s health condition had deteriorated in jail and they also demanded her treatment in the capital’s United Hospital and her release from jail immediately.
Although she was confined at her residence several times during anti-Ershad movement and army-backed interim government after the 1/11 changeover for political reason, Khaleda Zia was sent to jail for the first time in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.Tarique Rahman who has been staying in London since 2008 is an accused in a number of cases, including corruption and August 21 grenade attack case. He is also convict in a money laundering case and Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Sharmila Rahman Sithi, wife of Khaleda Zia’s late youngest son Arafat Rahman Koko and her two daughters will celebrate Eid in London, BNP sources said.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will celebrate Eid in the capital. He will offer fateha at the grave of Ziaur Rahman on the day and will try to meet Khaleda Zia in jail, one of his close aides told the daily sun.
BNP senior leaders, including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Rafiqul Islam Mia, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan, will celebrate eid in the capital.
“I’ll stay in Dhaka to celebrate Eid,” Khandaker Mosharraf told the daily sun.
BNP insiders informed that the party has a plan to launch a tougher street agitation after Eid to mount pressure on the government for release of its jailed chairperson. Al Amin/Zaman
