State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam on Wednesday said the government has imposed no VAT or tax on remittance in the proposed national budget.

The state minister also urged the expatriate Bangladeshis not to believe any rumours in this regard.

Shahriar came up with the call in a Facebook post while rumours go around that the government has imposed tax on remittance in the budget.

He said, “Expatriate brothers, don’t pay heed to rumours, no VAT and tax is imposed on remittance in this budget.” Even the government has not discussed the matter, but the rumourmongers are active to spread confusion, he continued.

The state minister also said those who run business to send money home via illegal ways can spread this type of rumours.

Anti-government elements are also involved in spreading confusing news among the Bangladeshi expatriates, he maintained.

Shahriar called for passing on his statement to all Bangladeshi expatriates around the world.

Of late, a video went viral in which it was seen a Bangladeshi, who claimed to be from Malaysia, sharply criticized Finance Minister AMA Muhith for what he says imposing so-called tax and VAT on income of expatriates.
