With the Eid-ul-Fitr approaching nearer, sales of prayer caps (tupi) and attar, a highly concentrated perfume, have gone up in the capital.
Hawkers and vendors on various roads and intersections, including Baitul Mukarram and Chowk Bazar are selling caps, attar, jainamaz (prayer mat), tasbihs (prayer beads), surma (powder for eyes) and meswak (wooden toothbrush) in full swing.According to vendors, cap and attar sales increased after the 25th of Ramadan and will continue till before the Eid.
Prices of caps range from Tk 30 to Tk 1000 each, tasbih from Tk 20 to Tk 500 while jainamaz from Tk 200 to Tk 2,500.
In addition to local caps, caps imported from India and China are also available. Chinese caps in a variety designs and colour are available for Tk 50 to Tk 250 each while caps from India are available at Tk 50 to Tk 200.
The local caps of different companies are priced between Tk 30 to Tk 100. Caps for kids are also available at Tk 50 to Tk 200.
Masum, salesman of the Arabian Attar House in Baitul Mukarram, said the demand for local caps is high this year. He is selling local caps which ranges from Tk 30 to Tk 1000 each.
Abdus Sattar, a resident of Azimpur, said, “Eid shopping is incomplete without the prayer cap. I bought caps from Baitul Mukarram because of the lower cost. I bought five caps from a Baitul Mukarram at Tk 100 each.”Shamim, a street vendor outside the Baitul Mukarram area, said “Caps cost between Tk 30 to Tk 250. Sales increased greatly from the 25th of Ramadan and will continue until the Eid Day.”
Local and foreign attar (perfume) including Gulbahara, Gul Red Rose, Laila, Belly, Arabian, Jui, Chameli, Jasmine are available in the capital’s elite shopping mall and in footpath shops. It costs between Tk 1,000 and Tk 40,000.
Azim Hossain, a businessman of Baitul Mukarram, said, “The demand of Pakistani and Saudi tasbihs is high. Many people came to buy jainamaz. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kashmir, Jordan and other countries jainamaz is available and they cost between Tk 250 and Tk 900.”
“Attar and caps are integral parts for Eid prayers. That’s why, along with my sons I came here to buy new caps to attend Eid prayers,” said Hasan Pavel, a customer of Chowk Bazar area in the city.
