CHATTOGRAM: A Chattogram court on Monday sent Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) city unit former General Secretary Nurul Azim Rony to jail in an extortion case filed in April this year.

The court of Chattogram Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Osman Goni passed the order after Rony surrendered before it, said Assistant Commissioner (Prosecution) Kazi Sahabuddin Ahmed of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).

He said Rony surrendered before the court with a bail petition on completion of his one-month bail obtained from the High Court in the case earlier.

“Rejecting the bail petition, the court sent him to jail after hearing on it,” said Sahabuddin.

Mentionable, Chattogram Biggyan College Principal Dr Mohammad Jahed Khan filed the case accusing 37 persons including Rony on charge of assaulting him and demanding Tk 20 lakh as extortion with the city’s Chawk Bazar police station on April 4.

Sources said the college authority realised Tk 5,000 from each of over 900 HSC examinees as development fees before the examination this year.

On information, a group of BCL-men led by Rony went to the college and inquired the matter to the principal on March 31.

At one stage of altercation over the matter, Rony beat up the principal while police were also present.

Later, CCTV footage of beating the principal by Rony went viral on social media.

Another case was also filed against Rony, his follower Noman Chowdhury Rakib and seven to eight unidentified ones on charge of assaulting a coaching centre director for Tk 20 lakh as extortion on April 19.
