The ruling Awami League believes that the victory in the Khulna city corporation election was possible because of the party’s grassroots unity and development work in the last nine years.

The party wants to keep the pace of election campaign, taking the victory as a ‘model’ for the next city corporation and national elections.

The party also believes that it will win in all the upcoming elections if the unity can be maintained.

Awami League mayoral candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque has won the Khulna city polls.

According to the election results, Khaleque got 1,74,891 votes while his nearest contestant Nazrul Islam Monju of BNP bagged 1,09,251 votes.

AL insiders say the party has taken the KCC election as a case study for the upcoming national election. It wants to resolve all problems by finding out its organisational weakness through observing the situations during elections.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said that their candidate Khaleque has won the KCC election due to his clean image and the government’s development activities.

“Awami League has scored the KCC poll victory due to nonpolitical voters, as they believed in the government’s development activities. The same results will be achieved in the Gazipur city and other elections,” he said.

On Tuesday, Quader said, “Lots of such huge defeat is waiting for BNP in the upcoming elections.”

A joint general secretary said that city election was a double challenge for Awami League as it has to ensure win in the election and the polls has to hold as a free and fair manner. Amid BNP’s allegation the election has ended with a good result for Awami League.

Awami League Presidium Member and 14-party spokesperson Mohammad Nasim said that it is the victory of the Awami League and the democracy in the KCC polls.

Awami League Organising Secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan told the daily sun that his party candidate won in the KCC election for picking right candidates and his clean image.

“The KCC election will be set a model for the upcoming all elections,” he said.

Meanwhile, coordinator in KCC polls of Awami League SM Kamal Hossain said that people of Khulna believed in development, that’s why they picked Khaleque as their mayor.

“The citizens of Khulna know about the development acts accomplished by Khaleque and the Awami League,” he said.
