Two former officers-in-charge (OCs) of Rupganj police station in Narayanganj are still ‘extorting money’ from drug peddlers, criminals and businessmen.
The officers are Ismail Hossain, now closed to Narayanganj district police lines, and Forkan Sikder, additional superintendent of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).An investigation found the picture of their criminal activities in Rupganj and its adjoining areas.
The two police officers are not only collecting tolls from offenders, but also extorting money from honest entrepreneurs and businessmen.
They are allegedly involved in toll collection from public transport and sand and land business.
According to sources, local municipality councillor Anwar Hossain illegally collects toll worth Tk 40 lakh per month from human haulers plying the Tarab highway. Upazila Swechchhasebak League president Mahbubur Rahman Meher and transport leader Mohammad Ali collect toll of Tk 20 lakh.
Besides, a man named Ratan collects Tk 10 lakh toll from public transports in Vulta area. Another group collects over Tk 2 lakh from vehicles running through Tarab bridge point of the Sitalakkhya river. The amount is collected using the name of BIWTA.
Around Tk 50 lakh is collected from businessmen for using the banks of Sitalakkhya river as transits for coal, fertiliser and granite.Local lawmaker’s close associate Habib, his wife’s PS Firoz and Raziv commissioner jointly collect around Tk 40,000 every day by allowing City Mill to park its trucks and vehicles on the street.
It was learnt that Tarab municipality Juba League president Mosharraf Hossain, upazila Swechchhasebak League general secretary Naim Bhuiyan and 21 others collect tolls from various mills and industries and they also control garments jhut business. They get Tk 1 crore per month.
Habib, a close aide to Rupganj lawmaker, earns several lakhs of taka from sand quarries.
Tunda Bazlu, top drug trader of Chonpara, along with Bindu Masi Kutti and Chora Swapon controls the illicit drug trade.
People of Rupganj demanded punitive action against the two dishonest police officers, who are tarnishing the image of the entire police department.
When Ismail Hossain was Rupganj OC, he used to harass local bonafide Awami League leaders and activists.
There are allegations that he took a huge amount of money from both parties of a case, if it was filed over murder, land dispute and other offences. Even witnesses to a case were not spared.
Instead of arranging proper investigation into a murder case and submitting charge sheet to the court, the OC tried to collect bribe from case parties and harass people.
Rupganj upazila Awami League is divided into two groups — one led by local lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi and another one by Rupganj Upazila Parishad chairman Shahjahan Bhuiyan and Kayetpara UP chairman Rafiqul Islam Rafique, sources said.
As majority of the leaders and activists are against Rupganj lawmaker Golam Dastagir, they are subjected to persecution and false cases filed by the lawmaker and his supporters.
Golam Dastagir, known as patroniser of BNP and Jamaat, harasses the opposite group in different ways, including filing of false cases.
