South Africa celebrated its 24th ‘Freedom Day’ today. On this day in 1994, the first democratic election gave birth to its constitutional democracy, says a press release.

The theme of the Day is “The year of Nelson Mandela: towards full realization of our freedom through radical socioeconomic transformation”.

This year’s Freedom Day celebration also coincides with the centenary anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela.

Dignity of majority of South Africans who had never voted before was restored and the country was transformed to a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society on this day.
