COX’S BAZAR: An alleged rapist was killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Banshkhali upazila in Chittagong district on early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Hakim alias Mintu, 30, son of Md Shamsul Alam of village Tekpara under the Banshkhali upazila.

Mentionable, Mintu allegedly violated a 10-year-old girl in his area on April 18.

Later, a case was filed accusing Mintu with the concerned police station in this connection on April 20.

Rab-7 Senior Assistant Director (Media) Mimtanur Rahman said on information that Mintu and his accomplices were staying in bordering area of the Banshkhali upazila and Pekua upazila in Cox’s Bazar, they carried out a drive at the spot at around 4:45am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire prompting the Rab-men to retaliate with bullet, he said.

At one stage of the gunfight, the criminals fled the scene while bullet-hit Mintu was found lying on the ground, Mimtanur said.

Injured Mintu was rushed to the Pekua Upazila Health Complex where on-duty physicians declared him dead, said the Rab officer.

A one-shooter-gun, five rounds of bullet and two empty cartridges were recovered from the spot later, he added.
