AL to bring in

quality leadership

in BCL: Quader

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said their party will bring in quality leadership in Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in its upcoming council session.

“Awami League president Sheikh Hasina has directed us to bring a qualitative change in BCL leadership,” he said.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, was speaking at a seminar arranged by its publicity and publication affairs subcommittee at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital.

Replying to a question, Quader said stern actions would be taken against wrongdoers whatever organisations they belong to.

“Our party stance is very clear. None will be spared after committing misdeeds. Our leader Sheikh Hasina also takes a strong stance against such offence,” he said.

The council of BCL will be held in the capital on May 11-12.

Quader called upon Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairperson Tarique Rahman to return to the country and take part in politics facing jail.

“If you have courage, then return to the country and take part in politics facing imprisonment,” he said.

“Tareque is a convicted person who is exiled abroad. The High Court has given an order to bring him to the country, so it can be implemented,” he added.

Referring to the demand of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Quader said next general election would be held as per constitutional provision.

Chairman of the publicity committee HT Imam presided over the seminar while publicity and publication secretary Hasan Mahmud and his deputy Aminul Islam Amin, among others, spoke at the programme.

Speaking at another programme, Quader alleged that BNP tries to create a contradiction between the government and army by demanding deployment of army in city polls. “We never claimed that army would not be deployed in the elections. Army will be deployed if the necessity arises,” he said.

Quader also claimed that BNP never deployed army in any election during their regime. “Why they raise illogical demand repeatedly?” he posed a question.

Mentioning that the Indian premier can join local body elections, Quader said lawmakers can join election campaign of local body in every democratic country, except Bangladesh.

“How level-playing field will be ensured if BNP secretary general can join polls campaign but I can’t. Even BNP chief Khaleda Zia can join polls campaign but prime minister Sheikh Hasina cannot join such campaign,” he said.
