The High Court will deliver on Sunday its order regarding the bail petition of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia orphanage trust graft case.
Khaleda Zia landed in jail after a lower court in Dhaka sentenced her to imprisonment for five years on February 8. After getting the certified copy of the verdict, she filed an appeal and bail petition with the High Court through her lawyers.
On February 22, the HC directed the lower court to send the documents of the case within 15 days.
A division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim completed hearing on the bail petition on February 26 and kept its order pending.The deadline for sending the case document expired on Wednesday.
Supreme Court Bar Association president Zainul Abedin, also Khaleda Zia’s counsel, told the HC on Thursday that the case documents are yet to reach the apex court despite expiry of deadline. He prayed to the HC to pass an order on the bail petition.
At this stage, the HC fixed Sunday for passing an order on the bail petition.
Meanwhile, five defence counsels met Khaleda Zia in old Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday afternoon. The lawyers are AJ Mohammad Ali, Zainul Abedin, Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Abdul Rezzaque and Sanaullah Mia.
At a press briefing at the jail gate, the lawyers, quoting the BNP chairperson said that she is optimistic about the bail. They also said that she has faith in the court.
