Lt Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd captain Nurul Hasan Sohan’s aggressive batting gave table-topper Dhaka Abahani Ltd a scare before they recovered to post a comfortable 47-run win over Sheikh Jamal in their Walton Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match on Thursday.

Chasing 270 to for win, Jamal lost four wickets within 87 before Nurul went on counter attacking with a swashbuckling 83 off 74 deliveries to bring them back in the hunt.

Jamal’s run chase floundered at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan Ground 4 in Savar as they slumped from 205-6 to 223 all out.

Nurul hit 10 boundaries and four sixes in a commanding innings but eventually lost his cool and was stumped by Sanzamul Islam (1-43), evaporating all hopes for Sheikh Jamal.

Earlier after opting to bat first, Abahani posted a commanding 270 for 7 in their fifty overs, relying on opener Anamul Haque’s brilliant century (116 from 122 balls) and Mosaddek Hossain’s (49 off 70 balls) valuable supportive role.

Abahani score was also boosted by the flurry of their tail-enders in the death overs where Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Sanzamul added an unbeaten 58-run stand for the eight-wicket. Jamal’s pacer Robiul Haque bagged three wickets.

Apart from Nurul, no Jamal’s batsmen showed any hope of triumph during run chase. Jalaj Saxena contributed 43 but that proved a little too late.

Abahani captain Mashrafe Mortaza who was named the player of the match, was Abahani’s most potent bowler with five wickets for 29 runs, while Mehedi Hasan Miraz took two wickets.

With this win, topper Abahani remains unbeaten in their ongoing DPL campaign with five successive wins.

Meanwhile, Legends of Rupganj pulled off a commanding 55-run win against Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Put into bat first, Rupganj’s impressive total of 272-7 was built around a steady 78 by captain Naeem Islam, Mushfiqur Rahim’s 65 and opener Abdul Mazid’s 59 before bowling Prime Doleshwar out for 217.

Rupganj’s left arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain claimed four wickets for 40 while Asif Hasan took three wickets.

Rupganj’s skipper Naeem Islam was adjudged the player of the match for his captain’s knock.

On the other hand, Gazi Group Cricketers’ captain Imrul Kayes clobbered a brisk half century as Mominul Hoque continued to lengthen his good form with a 57-run innings before Gurkeerat Singh Mann provided the finishing touches, whose match winning knock of 71 in 88 balls pulled of a daunting chase to stun Brothers Union by two wickets at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan Ground 3 in Savar.

Chasing a daunting 274 to win, Opener Imrul Kayes put on an incredible display of power-hitting while Mann held his nerve with a match winning innings as Gazi overhauled the target with five balls to spare.
