Defence lawyers for BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, now in jail following conviction in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, may file a bail petition with the High Court in a couple of days for her release.
Lawyers of the former prime minister said they have taken all necessary preparations for seeking her bail.
They will, however, require a certified copy of the trial court verdict for submission with the bail petition to the apex court.
Advocate Sanaullah Mia, BNP law affairs secretary and one of the defence counsels, told the daily sun: “We applied to the section concerned of the lower court on Thursday, seeking a certified copy of the verdict. We are yet to get the certified copy.”
He said the bail petition may be filed in a couple of days subject to receipt of the certified copy of the verdict.
Earlier, Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, a BNP chief’s adviser and also a defence counsel, said the bail petition will be filed shortly after getting the certified copy.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Zainul Abedin said the bail petition is likely to be filed tomorrow, if certified copy of the lower court verdict is obtained.
A legal expert said certified copy of a verdict is issued after necessary formalities.Everyday, courts are passing many verdicts and the officials entrusted with the job to prepare certified copies are overloaded with work, he added.
He, however, said that the certified copy of the verdict against BNP chief Khaleda Zia may be issued on priority basis considering her political and social status.
Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will submit bail petition to the High Court for party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday or Monday if they get necessary papers in due time.
“We will submit bail petition to the High Court on Sunday or Monday subject to availability of necessary papers. Work has already started in this regard," he said while talking to newsmen in front of Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office.
Asked when they will get the certified copy of the verdict against Khaleda Zia, Mirza Fakhrul said their lawyers know well about it. The lawyers are saying that they can process it by tomorrow (Sunday), he added.
About Khaleda's current condition in jail, Mirza Fakhrul said he came to know that she has been kept at the abandoned room of the jail super at the Old Central Jail.
He hopes that Khaleda Zia will get all the facilities she deserves as a former prime minister.
He alleged the ruling Awami League is spreading a propaganda against Khaleda Zia. "We didn't expect that the AL will humiliate another political leader in such a way."
BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan and Mohammad Shahjahan, were present.
