Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Dhaka University (DU) unit on Monday ‘sexually harassed’ some female students who along with male students have been demonstrating on the campus for several days demanding cancellation of affiliation of seven colleges with their institution.

They also beat up convener of the movement Mashiur Rahman and took away phones of two DU correspondents – Ashik Abdullah Opu of The Daily Star and Mamun Tushar of NTV – as they were filming the incident of beating by their mobiles.

On the day, general students boycotted their classes and exams and marched through the campus.

Later, they gathered in front of the office of DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman to talk to him and waited for a long period of time, but he did not turn up. Then, they sat down in front of the office and chanted slogans.

Around 2:30 pm, leaders and activists of DU unit BCL led by BCL President Saifur Rahman Sohag, General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain, DU BCL President Abid Al Hasan and General Secretary Motahar Hossain Prince gathered in front of VC office and tried to calm down the situation.

After meeting the DU VC, Abid Al Hasan and Motahar Hossain asked demonstrators to choose five representatives and talk to the VC.  But students demanded that the VC appear before them.

At this stage, BCL Bangabandhu Hall unit Secretary Al Amin allegedly beat up Mashiur Rahman, took him to the VC office and took away phones of the two journalists.

Al Amin ordered demonstrators to leave the place or face severe action.  Around 3:00 pm, BCL leaders and activists surrounded the female students who were sitting on the office premises and were ‘subjected to sexual harassment’.

BCL President and General Secretary said, “We don’t know who launched the attack on students and harassed female students.”
