In1991, a new department ‘English’ was born in the womb of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia for achieving the universal education, knowledge at English language, literature and critics. The department was launched with fifty students, headed by M Mustafizur Rahman. The academic activities of the department started from 1990-91. A standard curriculum system for four year honours courses was introduced in1997-98 academic sessions. And now, apart from honours degree, students of the department can avail themselves of pursuing Master’s, MPhil and PhD degrees in the university.

A total of 31 qualified and sensible teachers of the department are providing knowledge among students. The faculty members are consisted of 11 Professors, 3 Associate Professors and 16 Assistant Professors. Many teachers of the department have been working at the vital posts of the university administrative sections including vice chancellor Prof Dr M Haruu-Ur-Rashid Askari, pro-vice chancellor Prof Dr M Shahinoor Rahman, Sheikh Hasina Hall provost Prof Dr M Mizanur Rahman, IU Debating Society moderator Prof Dr M Mamunr Rahman, director of university foreign cell Prof Dr M Rezaul Haque, director of Institute of Islamic Education Research (IIER) Prof Dr M Maher Ali, Sheikh Russell Hall provost Prof Dr Miah M Rashiduzzaman, Bangabandhu Hall provost Prof Sahadath Hossain Azad, Assistant Prof Afroza Banu Shathi, assistant proctor of the university and among others.

Earlier, students of this department used to face a lot of problems including session jam. English is a sought-after academic discipline in the country. But students get frustrated when they have to lose valuable academic years due to session jam. But, now things have changed. The English Department of IU is totally session-jam free.

It has been learned that the first year exams of 2013-14 academic sessions were held after 22 months of their admission, while the first year examination of 2015-16 sessions were held after only 10 months.

Professor Dr AHM Aktherul Islam Zillu is the current chairman of the department. He took charge as head of the department on January 1, in 2016. He was also a student of the department and suffered long session jam.

On contracted, Dr AHM Aktherul Islam Zillu said he was the student of the department of its first batch and it took him more than 8 years to finish his graduation and post-graduation. He was disappointed and promised that if he ever becomes the chairman of the department, he will make it session jam free.

So, after taking the charge as its Chairman, he kept his promise.

IU vice chancellor Professor Dr M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari said, “English is one of the leading departments of the varsity. It has many highly qualified and responsible teachers. They are trying to make the department more dynamic.”
