FMs of 3 countries visit Rohingya camps

Foreign ministers of three powerful countries and a high representative of the European Union visited Rohingya camps in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.


They visitors are Japanese foreign minister Taro Kono, German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel and Sweden foreign minister Margot Wallstrom and EU high representative Federica Mogherini.


Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam accompanied the high-level delegation during their daylong visit.


During the visit, the delegation heard the horrific stories of Rohingya people staying at Kutupalong camp.


They also witnessed the humanitarian operations by the government of Bangladesh, UN agencies and local and international NGOs.


After the visit, Sigmar Gabriel, at a press briefing, said they talked to the Rohingya people and it is clear that the atrocities on them by Myanmar army are not acceptable and this will be discussed at the ASEM meeting.


The foreign ministers of Bangladesh and Germany are expected to travel together to Myanmar to attend the 13th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the ASEM in Nay Pyi Daw.


The ASEM meeting is scheduled to be held in the capital of Myanmar, Nay Pyi Taw during November 21-22.


ASEM, Asia–Europe Meeting, is an Asian–European political dialogue forum to enhance relations and various forms of cooperation between its partners.


The high dignitaries and their delegations separately arrived in Dhaka to make the visit.


The combined visit of four high level delegations is the first of its kind since the crisis began in August 25, 2017.
