Cox’s Bazar: Police arrested a Bangladeshi oarsman and seized his boat on charge of bringing 125 Rohingyas from Myanmar side of the Naf river on Friday.

The arrestee is identified as Md Majed, 36, son of Abu Shama of Sonarpara area under Ukhia upazila in the district.

Sources said Majed brought some 125 Rohingyas, including 28 men, 40 women and 57 children by his boat through Rupabati point of Ukhia upazila at around 1:45pm.

On information, members of community police detained Majed and the Rohingyas from the spot.

Later, police rushed to the spot and arrested Majed. His boat was also seized, said Cox’s Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Afruzul Hoque Tutul.

The Rohingyas were sent to different camps in Ukhia upazila and filing of a case against Majed was under process, he said.

Mentionable, the local administration earlier restricted transportation of Rohingyas by any Bangladeshi oarsman or broker from Myanmar to Bangladesh.
