The post of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) has been vacant for months in six upazilas of Barisal division, depriving people of getting proper services.
Assistant commissioners (Land) in the six upazilas have been discharging the responsibilities of UNO as additional duty taking huge workload.
The upazilas, where the UNO post lies vacant, are Gournadi in Barisal, Monpura in Bhola, Rangabali in Patuakhali, Nazirpur and Kawkhali in Pirojpur and Taltali in Barguna.

A recent coordination meeting of divisional commissioners at public administration ministry discussed the matter and asked additional secretary (APD wing) to take steps to fill the vacant posts on immediate basis.
Md Shahiduzzaman, Divisional Commissioner of Barisal, told daily sun that the ministry posted officials as UNO in the six upazilas by issuing an order.
The officer is on transit and will join the workplace this month,” he added.

Shahiduzzaman also said many officials show reluctance to discharge duty in upazila level so that they can pursue the ministry to get posting in other places.
It is learnt that Towsir Ahmed, AC Land of Taltali Upazila, has been discharging the duties of UNO as additional duty for about a year.
Contacted, Towsir said he has to take work overload as he is discharging dual responsibilities.
The post of UNO has been vacant at Gournadi upazila for about four months.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Barisal Gazi Saifuzzaman said people under Gournadi are being deprived of getting proper service due to vacancy of the UNO post.
