USTC students threaten to lock all departments

CHITTAGONG: Agitating MBBS students of University of Science and Technology, Chittagong (USTC) announced to keep all departments of the university under lock and key from Monday.

They made the announcement to press home their demand for getting registered for Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) examination.

The students also locked the entrances of Medicine Faculty and Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital-run by the university on Thursday.

The situation is causing immense suffering to the patients, who are coming at the hospital from different parts of Chittagong city and districts.

The students also brought out processions on the campus and nearby busy Zakir Hossain Road.

They said they will continue the demonstration until their demand is met.

Some leaders of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Chittagong chapter also expressed solidarity with the agitation.

Mentionable, students of three batches of the USTC have been continuing agitation demanding the registration since January this year.

BMDC authorities were not registering the students of the three batches as the USTC authorities enrolled more students compared to the approved seats.

Later, the authorities concerned fined the university Tk 10 crore in this connection and asked to deposit the money by March 22.

But, the USTC authorities didn’t pay the money prompting the students to continue movement, said the sources.

When contacted, USTC Registrar Prof Dr Badrul Amin Bhuiyan told the daily sun that the university authorities is trying to settle the issue.

He however said it will take time to get a positive solution in this regard.
