Prime Minister’s Adviser Zahed-ur-Rahman on Saturday said the proposed amendments to the Cyber Security Act have yet to be approved and could be revised based on opinions from all stakeholders.
Zahed said the BNP government would not abuse the Cyber Security Act or use it to coerce media outlets as the Awami League regime did, at a discussion organised by the Broadcast Journalist Centre (BJC) on the proposed amendments and journalists’ views.
He said the different approaches stem from the elected nature of the governments.
Emphasising the need to counter disinformation, Zahed said Bangladesh needs a cybersecurity law that protects its people.
The proposed amendments classify broad offences such as “bullying” and “humiliation” as punishable offences, carrying a maximum sentence of five months in prison and a Tk20 lakh fine.
