For Abu Mohammad Salah Uddin – better known to millions as Salahuddin Sumon – the journey from a television newsroom to the icy waters of Antarctica was never part of a carefully scripted career plan. Yet today, his story has become one of the most remarkable career transitions in Bangladesh's digital media landscape.

A graduate and post-graduate of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Rajshahi, Sumon began his professional life as a journalist, a profession he once believed would define his entire career. Those who knew him during his university years remember him as an ambitious student with a passion for reporting and storytelling.

Over the following years, he worked with national and international media organisations, developing a reputation for in-depth reporting and strong visual storytelling. The discipline of broadcast journalism – verifying information, understanding context and presenting complex issues in an engaging manner – would later become the foundation of his success on digital platforms.

Leaving a stable journalism career, however, was anything but easy.

At a time when digital content creation was still viewed with scepticism by many, Sumon made the difficult decision to step away from mainstream media to pursue independent storytelling. The move surprised colleagues and attracted public attention, with many questioning whether a respected journalist could build a sustainable future outside conventional newsrooms.

Years later, that decision appears to have reshaped not only his own career but also the landscape of Bengali travel content.

Today, Salahuddin Sumon reaches more than eight million followers across social media platforms, where he produces documentaries and feature-style videos on history, heritage, travel and lifestyle. Rather than focusing solely on picturesque destinations, his productions often explore the historical background, cultural significance and human stories behind the places he visits.

Media observers often point to his journalistic training as a defining characteristic of his work. His videos typically feature extensive research, structured narratives and contextual reporting—qualities more commonly associated with long-form journalism than conventional travel vlogging.

Beyond filmmaking, Sumon has also written books exploring lesser-known chapters of Bengal's history, reflecting an enduring interest in historical research and documentation.

His work has found audiences across both Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, connecting Bengali-speaking viewers through stories that celebrate shared history, language and culture. For many in the global Bengali diaspora, his documentaries offer not only travel experiences but also a renewed connection with their heritage.

Perhaps the most distinctive aspect of Sumon's career has been his determination to document destinations that remain largely inaccessible to Bangladeshi travellers.

Together with his long-time travel companion Nilay Kumar Biswas, he has travelled to some of the world's most remote regions, including the sub-Antarctic islands, Antarctica, the Arctic, the Amazon rainforest, Patagonia, Tibet and Mongolia. Producing Bengali-language documentaries from these locations requires months of planning, specialised expedition logistics, multiple international visas and substantial financial investment.

For travellers from Bangladesh, such expeditions remain exceptionally challenging because of distance, cost and travel restrictions. Yet Sumon has consistently sought to bridge that gap by bringing these places to Bengali audiences through carefully produced documentaries that combine education with visual storytelling.

Alongside his work as a creator, Sumon also established Bengal Vista Tours, a Bangladesh-based tour operator that organises expeditions to destinations including Tibet, Mongolia, Antarctica and the Arctic. The initiative reflects his broader ambition of encouraging Bangladeshis to explore places that were once considered beyond reach.

He also serves as a brand promoter for Turkish Airlines, while continuing to collaborate with international tourism and expedition partners.

Throughout his career, Sumon has received multiple recognitions for his contribution to travel content creation. More significantly, he has inspired a generation of aspiring storytellers who see digital media not merely as entertainment but as a platform for education, cultural exchange and responsible journalism.

Those who have followed his work argue that his greatest achievement is not measured by follower counts alone. Instead, it lies in demonstrating that the principles of journalism – accuracy, context, curiosity and public engagement – can thrive beyond traditional newsrooms.

In an age dominated by short-form videos and fleeting online trends, Salahuddin Sumon has chosen a different path: telling stories with patience, depth and purpose. His career stands as a reminder that journalism is not confined to television studios or newspaper pages. Sometimes, it begins anew on a windswept glacier, a remote Himalayan pass or the deck of an expedition ship sailing towards the edge of the world.
