Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday expressed concern over what he described as a lack of transparency on the part of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, alleging that crucial information relating to the 5 August political changeover had been withheld.
Calling for the disclosure of all relevant facts to ensure accountability and restore public confidence, Shafiqur – also the leader of the opposition in parliament – questioned what he termed inconsistencies between the President’s earlier remarks and his more recent statements on the issue.
In a post published at 5:06pm on Tuesday on his verified Facebook page, Shafiqur referred to a could help revitalise ineffective local government bodies.
Fakhrul said the government’s main goal was to hold elections and make all local government institutions fully operational as soon as possible.
Priority would be given to Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chattogram city corporations,
recent interview given by the President, in which the head of state spoke about his experiences following the political changeover triggered by the July uprising.
“President Mohammed Shahabuddin has concealed many facts regarding 5 August 2024,” Shafiqur wrote, claiming that the president’s current account does not align with what he had reportedly told political leaders present on the day about the alleged resignation of the then prime minister, nor with what he later conveyed to the nation.
“Will the president reconcile what millions of people heard, what he said that day, and what he is saying now?” the Jamaat chief asked.
“The nation is not ignorant. Such behaviour from the highest office of the state is unacceptable,” he added.
In the interview with Kaler Kantho, President Shahabuddin reflected on what he described as one and a half years of effective confinement at Bangabhaban during the interim government period. He spoke of “multiple conspiracies” against him and alleged attempts to remove him from office through unconstitutional means.
The President credited his own resolve, as well as the support of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party leadership and the armed forces, with preserving constitutional continuity.
Despite protests and demonstrations at the time, he said he remained firm in his commitment to upholding the constitution, recalling the intense political pressure he faced in the aftermath of the 5 August changeover.
