The general inflation rate went up to 5.55 percent in March from 5.47 percent in February last due to price hike of different food items.
"The general inflation rate increased to 5.55 percentage point in March," Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters while releasing the monthly consumer price index at the Planning Commission in the city's Sher-e Bangla Nagar area.Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data show that food inflation increased to 5.72 percent in March from 5.44 percent in the previous month.
But the non-food inflation rate declined to 5.29 percent in March while it was 5.51 percent in February.
The prices of fish, meat, vegetables, edible oil, fruits and other food items increased in March, the BBS data show.
In rural areas, the general inflation rate increased to 5.38 percent in March from 5.26 percent in February as the food inflation went up to 5.80 percent from 5.48 percent there. But the non-food inflation rate declined at 4.58 percent in March from 4.86 percent in February in the rural area.
In urban areas, the general inflation rate slightly went up to 5.86 percent in March from 5.85 percent in February as the food inflation rate increased at 5.52 percent from 5.38 percent there.
However, the non-food inflation rate declined to 6.24 percent in March from 6.39 percent in February, 2019 in urban areas.The point-to-point national wage index witnessed an upward trend with 6.56 percent in March against 6.48 percent in February.
