The High Court on Thursday directed the government authorities to remove electricity poles from critical places of roads and highways to escape accidents.

A division bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Sayedul Haque Sumon.

The HC ordered removal of electricity poles within two months.

The ministry for power, energy and mineral resources and the ministry for housing and public works will have to comply with the court order.

The HC directed other departments concerned to provide the two ministries with necessary support to remove the roadside poles.

The petitioner has seen an electricity pole in the middle of Shibpur road in Narsingdi on his way to Sylhet. He took a photo of the pole and posted it on facebook.

Later, people from different parts of the country sent him photos of poles erected in the middle of roads and highways posing risks of accidents.

Indiscriminate installation of electricity poles on roads and highways prompted the lawyer to file the writ petition.

Earlier, passengers of a laguna were affected by an electric pole in Mohammadpur area of the capital.

On September 4, 2015 fourteen people sustained burn injuries in electrocution when a live electric wire fell on a running Leguna in Mohammadpur.

The accident took place on Tajmahal Road in front of Mohammadpur Krishi Market.

A woman and a child were killed in electrocution after being exposed to a live electric wire in Chattogram in 2015.
