A fire broke out at a plastic factory at Islambagh in Lalbagh of Old Dhaka on Thursday.

Fire service officials said the blaze started at the factory at around 12:40pm.

On receiving information, firefighters rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control at around 2:10pm.

Contracted, fire service official Ershadul Islam said 13 units of fire fighters brought the blaze under control after two hour-long hectic efforts.

However, no injury or death has so far been reported.

Locals said a total of 16 small factories and around 20 warehouses were already burnt to ashes before the fire service managed to bring the fire under control.

The densely populated area has several houses adjacent to the factory where the fire originated. The majority of the houses

have factories and warehouses located downstairs with people living upstairs in tin-roofed rooms.

Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Saleh Uddin said Fire-fighters had struggled to bring the fire under control in the densely populated area.

“The area is overpopulated. Fire-fighting vehicles had to be parked far away and the water was brought in through pipes to douse the fire” he added.

Fire service personnel had not yet confirmed what had caused the flame. The extent of loss caused by the fire could not be estimated immediately.
