The Election Commission (EC) is ready to announce the schedule for the 11th parliamentary elections in the first week of November.
As per the Article 123 (3) (a) of constitution, the next national polls should be held within 90 days before completion of the tenure of the 10th parliament.
The 10th parliament sat on January 29, 2014 after the January 5 general election while the next national election will be held between October 31 and January 28 as per constitutional provision.
EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said they have completed all preparations for announcing the polls schedule.
To fix the polls schedule, the EC will hold a meeting on November 3, said EC’s Additional Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman.
Aspirants from all political parties are getting ready for the next election as the EC is going to announce the polls schedule soon.
They have been conducting mass contact in their areas to woo voters ahead of the national election.
The aspirants are now eagerly waiting for announcement of the polls schedule.
A major alliance led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the 10th national elections held in 2014.
However, people of the country are expecting a free, fair and credible election with participation of all political parties this time, as the ruling Awami League has responded positively to a proposal of Jatiya Oikya Front, a new alliance of opposition parties, including BNP, for a dialogue.
To discuss the preparations regarding the 11th parliamentary elections, an inter-ministerial meeting will be held at the EC conference room at 11:00pm on Wednesday, an EC source said.
The commission will seek assistance from different ministries to implement EC’s progress over the parliamentary election and its coordination with the ministries.
Different issues, including necessary reformation of voting centres, transportation of polling materials, review of exam schedule, loan defaulter’s information, maintaining electoral code of conducts, weather forecast, assistance to use postal ballot, removal of promotional contents in advance and security measures, will be discussed in the meeting.
The EC has decided, in principle, to announce the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) polls schedule on November 4.
The incumbent CEC and other election commissioners will meet President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban in the capital at 4:00pm on Thursday, to discuss the polls schedule.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda is likely to announce the polls schedule after addressing the nation on November 4, a source at EC said.
A letter has been sent to Bangladesh Television (BTV) in this regard, he added.
The CEC’s address will be recorded at the EC secretariat on November 3.
A commissioner of the EC told the daily sun that the CEC could announce the polls schedule on November 4, if he gets consent from the President.
Demarcation of 300 constituencies has been completed, list of around 40,199 polling stations has been published earlier, voters list CD and list of over two lakh vote booths have been completed and the EC will publish the list of returning officers soon after the announcement of schedule.
The EC approved a Tk 700 crore budget for organising the 11th parliamentary elections.
Most of the election materials have been stored and rest of it will be purchased before the announcement of polls schedule.
