The daily sun, a leading English newspaper in the country, stepped into the ninth year of its publication on Wednesday.
An outlet under East West Media Group Limited (EWMGL), a concern of Bashundhara Group, daily sun has undertaken a two-day programme at its office to celebrate its eighth anniversary beginning on Tuesday.
The new-generation English broadsheet started its journey on October 24 in 2010 with the slogan, ‘true and impartial’, and eventually earned huge popularity among English newspaper readers.
Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir and Director Sabrina Sobhan inaugurated the celebration by cutting a cake on Tuesday evening.
Speaking on the occasion, the managing director wished daily sun the best of luck. “The daily sun excelled in its activities all the times. I hope the newspaper will do even better in the future,” he said.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have given separate messages to greet the daily sun on its eighth anniversary of publication.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid said: “I am happy to know that the daily sun is stepping into the ninth year of its publication on October 24, 2018. On this auspicious occasion, I would like to congratulate the management, newsmen, contributors, readers, patrons, and distributors of the newspaper.”
He recalled the paramount role of newspapers and journalists in flourishing democracy, establishing an equitable society and upholding the constitution.
He called upon the journalists to work carefully and sincerely for the welfare of the country and its people.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in his speech said: “I am very happy to know that the daily sun is stepping into its ninth year of publication. I would like to congratulate the management, newsmen and readers of the newspaper on the occasion.”
She said as Awami League government believes in freedom of the press, it has taken various measures to flourish the sector.
The premier referred to the declaration of newspaper sector as a service-oriented industry, enactment of Right to Information Act and constitution of the Welfare Trust for Journalists as a few of the initiatives to make the media stronger and more vibrant.
Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan has also given a message congratulating the daily sun on its eighth anniversary.
He said Bashundhara Group came into being three decades ago with a clear aim and objective to serve the people and the country. He said starting its journey with East West Property Development Limited in 1987, the company kept widening its areas of business and already entered almost all major industrial and business sectors to attain the objectives.
“The Group ventured into the media industry with the understanding that keeping people abreast of latest information in varied fields has become an important element of serving them and helping them develop intellectually and economically,” he added.

Mentioning that daily sun is the second-highest circulated English daily in the country, the editor expressed hope that the daily will clinch the top position in future.
“The newspaper was launched with a firm commitment – satisfying the quest of the readers for knowledge and objective journalism. The daily sun has kept its efforts up for the last eight years to fulfil the commitment and never deviated from it in any situation. And the result is obvious; the newspaper has earned the trust of readers of English newspaper of all classes and reached a prominent position among the national dailies of the country,” he said.
Daily sun News Editor Syed Afzal Hossain, Joint News Editor Mirza Md Mohsin, Business Editor Md Ziaur Rahman, Chief Reporter M Firoz Al Mamun, other journalists, officials and employees were also present on the occasion.
Office of the newspaper was decorated with colourful balloons, festoons and banners to celebrate the anniversary.
Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, ministers, high officials from both public and private sectors, foreign diplomats, readers and contributors are expected to attend the anniversary celebration programme at the daily sun office in city’s Bashundhara Residential area on Wednesday.
Apart from the daily sun, EWMGL owns Bengali dailies Bangladesh Pratidin and Kaler Kantho, television channel NEWS24, radio station Capital FM and online newspaper banglanews24.com.
