Fourteen eminent citizens from different strata of society have demanded that Barrister Mainul Hosein publicly apologise for derogatory comments on journalist Masuda Bhatti.

“We strongly condemn such derogatory comments on Masuda Bhatti. We think that none has the authority to call someone ‘characterless’ in response to a journalistic query. This kind of act is quite unpredictable from politician and lawyer Barrister Mainul Hosein at a time when free media and journalism is affected in many ways”, said a joint statement of the eminent citizens.

The joint statement demanded that Barrister Mainul Hosein publicly apologise ‘unconditionally’ and withdraw his comments.

“Public apology is required not only for Masuda Bhatti, but for stoppage of such kind of act in future”, it said.

Signatories to the statement are Professor Anisuzzaman, Hasan Azizul Huq, Anupam Sen, Ramendu Majumdar, Ataur Rahman, Ferdousi Majumdar, Aly Jaker, Mamunur Rashid, Nasir Uddin Yusuf,Tarique Ali, Sara Zaker, Shimul Yousuf, Kabi Muhmmad Samad and Hasan Arif.

Barrister Mainul Hosein, a former adviser to caretaker government, termed Amader Notun Somoy acting editor and columnist Masuda Bhatti as ‘characterless’ at a live talk show of a private television on Tuesday.
