Rainfall and tidal water under the impact of the depression in the Bay of Bengal inundated some low-lying areas causing immense suffering to the port city dwellers on Tuesday.
The rain that started on Monday afternoon continued till Tuesday afternoon.Commuters especially office goers, students of educational institutions and garment workers suffered much due to shortage of transport during the rainfall.
Normal activities were hampered to a great extent as residents of the affected areas remained marooned at that time.
The affected areas were Halishahar, CDA Residential Area, Chawk Bazar, Kapasgola, Bakolia and Bahoddarhat among others.
The residents of the CDA Residential Area were worst victims of the waterlogging as water entered different establishments including residential houses and business firms during the rainfall and high-tide.
On-duty Forecasting Officer Md Mazharul Islam of Met Office in the city’s Patenga area told the daily sun that they recorded a total of 76.2mm rainfall in 24-hours ended at 3:00pm on Tuesday.
He also forecasted that there is also possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall on Wednesday.On the other hand, Chattogram district administration asked the people living at the risky hill slopes to leave the spots to ward off any accident.
A shelter centre was also opened in Lalkhan Bazar area for the people, said sources.
