Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has unearthed massive corruption by customs house and port authorities of Mongla sea port and cases of extortion and corruption at Burimari land port.
The German-based organisation came up with the disclosure at a press conference in the capital on Sunday.
The TIB study, titled ‘Burimari Land Port & Customs Station and Mongla Port & Custom House: Governance Challenges in Import-Export and Way Out’, reported that employees of Customs House at the Mongla port were involved with corruption worth Tk 15.69 crore in 2016-17 fiscal.
TIB also found corruption worth Tk 4.61 crore conducted by Mongla port authorities during the same period.
Executive Director of TIB, Dr Iftekharuzzaman came up with the revealation at the briefing.
Referring to the study, he said that corruption estimated around Tk 17.10 lakh were committed by the Burimari Land port authorities and Customs station in the fiscal year 2017-18 fiscal.
Transport Workers' Union extorts Tk 900 from each truck with a total of Tk 5.41 crore extortion each year at the Burimari Land port, he pointed out.
