Youth killed in clash over extortion

CHATTOGRAM: A youth was killed and five others were injured in a clash between two groups allegedly over extortion in the city’s Khulshi area on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Hriody Hossain alias Sukkur, 22, son of Abul Khayer, of Jhautala area under Khulshi Police Station, while the injured were Mahbub Alam, 30, Tajul Islam Rony, 35, Sabbir, 17, Rocky, 22, and Saiful, 28, of the same area.               

Sources said one Saiful, friend of victim Sukkur, was constructing a building in the Jhautala area.

Two youths identified as Rony and Anis allegedly demanded Tk 2 lakh as extortion from Saiful when construction materials were being offloaded from a truck on Friday night.  

Saiful called in his friends, including Sukkur over mobile phone to settle the matter at that time, they said.

At one stage of altercation, the extortionists hit Sukkur and others with batons and iron rods leaving them injured critically at around 11:00pm.

They were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where Sukkur succumbed to his injuries at around 8:15am on Saturday, said Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Shilbrata Barua of the hospital police outpost.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Md Nasir Uddin of Khulshi Police Station said they were investigating into the matter.

Filing of a case in this connection was under process, said the OC.
