Two school students drown in Sherpur

In a pathetic incident, two sixth grader mates drowned in the Bhogai river in Tarakanda area of Nakla upazila of Sherpur on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Omar Faruk, 12, son of Genda Mia and Akhter Miah, 12, son of Shanto Miah, residents of Goregaon Mahalla. Faruk was a class VI student of Nakla Pilot High School and Shanto was also in the same class of Muktijoddha Smrity Bidya Niketan School.

Khan Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Nakla Police Station, said Faruk and Shanto went to Tarakanda Rubber dam in the river around 5pm to enjoy Eid vacation.

Later, they went to an island in the river for playing.

At one stage, Faruk, Shanto and another boy slipped into the river and went missing.

Hearing screaming of other boys, locals rushed there and rescued one.

After two and half hour of frantic efforts, locals recovered the bodies.
