At least 14 people were killed in road crashes across the country on Monday during their home journey ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
In the capital, a motorbike rider of Pathao was killed on Monday after being hit by a truck from behind in Beribadh area of Mohammadpur.The deceased was identified as Sohlel Parvez, who hailed from Chuadanga Sadar upazila.
According to the officer in charge (OC) of Mohammadpur police station, Sohel was driving his bike along a dilapidated road in Beribadh area of Mohammadpur when a truck hit his bike from behind leaving him critically injured.
He said that nearby pedestrians rushed him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for treatment where on-duty doctors pronounced him dead.
Police seized the killer truck, but its driver escaped, he added.
The body was kept at DMC morgue for post-mortem. In Gazipur, two teenage girls were killed as an auto-rickshaw collided head- on with a covered van in Konabari area of the district on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Sadia Naziz Mim and Sanjida of Kaliakoir upazila in the district.Locals and witnesses said two speeding covered vans were competing on the Dhaka-Tangail highway near Notunbazar area. At one stage, one of the vehicles collided with the auto-rickshaw carrying five passengers leaving two of them killed on the spot and injuring others.
Salna highway police station OC Basudeb Sinha confirmed the incident saying two bodies were brought to the morgue.
In Mymensignh, a youth was killed as a cow-laden truck overturned at a place in Tarakanda upazila on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Sohel Mia of the same upazila.
Tarakanda police station OC Mahbubul Haque said the Dhaka-bound cow-laden truck was coming from Sherpur. At a certain stage, it overturned midway as its driver lost control over the steering.
Another person named Sujan was injured in the accident. He was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital for treatment, the OC said.
In Feni, six people, including five members of a family, were killed and eight others injured as a cattle-laden truck crashed into a microbus on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway near the district town in the early hours of Monday.
Muhuriganj Highway Police Outpost sub-inspector Md Mahbub Alam said the accident occurred in Sultana Filling Station area of Muhuriganj around 3:00am on Monday.
“Two of the dead are children and three women,” he said, adding that all of them are members of the same family.
The injured were admitted to Feni Sadar Hospital and another hospital at Baroiarhat in Chattogram’s Mirersarai.
“We came to know that the family was heading towards Chattogram’s Shah Amanat Airport to meet a family member arriving from abroad,” he said.
But, police are yet to know the identities of the dead.
According to Feni Fire Service and Civil Defence senior station officer Md Kabir Hossain, a truck coming from Teknaf carrying cattle for a Eid market in Feni collided head-on with the microbus near Sultana Filling Station. Both the vehicles were badly damaged, he said.
Immediately after the accident, locals rescued the injured truck driver, his assistant and the cattle trader and took them to Baroiarhat hospital for treatment.
With the arrival of fire service personnel, the rescue operation geared up.
The firefighters recovered six bodies from the wreckage of the microbus, Kabir Hossain said.
The accident led to traffic congestion on both sides of the highway, said Muhuriganj Highway police Outpost SI Md Mahbub.
Traffic movement resumed around 6:00am after removal of the two vehicles from the road.
Seventeen cows were on the truck during the accident, he said.
In Gaibandha, three CNG-run auto-rickshaw passengers were killed after a bus hit the auto-rickshaw from behind in Palashbari area on Monday.
However, identities of the deceased could not be known immediately after the accident.
In Jhenaidah, a college student was run over by a truck in Pachmail area of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Sefaz Shahriar Setu of Damurhuda upazila under Chuadanga district.
Jhenaidah Sadar police station OC Emdadul Haque Sheikh said Setu was returning to his Chuadanga home by a motorbike from Dhaka. When his motorbike reached Pachmail, he was run by over by the truck leaving him dead on the spot.
A person was also injured in the accident, he said.
