Asian Games Football: Bangladesh force Thailand to play 1-1 draw

Bangladesh U-23 team forced stronger and upper-ranked Thailand U-23 side to play 1-1 draw in their 2nd Group B match of the 18th Asian Games Men’s Football at the Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong, Bogor in Indonesia on Thursday.

Bangladesh National team suffered 0-4 goals against Thailand in their last match in the FIFA International Friendly in Bangkok in 2014. Bangladesh won 3-1 in their last match against Thailand in 1989 in Dhaka in their two victories in 14 matches.

Despite day’s creditable draw, Bangladesh (FIFA World National Ranking 194) were already eliminated from the Asiad football race with only one point from two matches following their frustrating 0-3 goals defeat against top seed and group leader Uzbekistan (FIFA World National Ranking 95)  in the opening match at the same venue on Tuesday last.

With the day’s draw, Thailand (FIFA World National Ranking 122)  were in the 2nd slot in the four-team group with unbeaten record after group leader Uzbekistan (3 points from one match), securing two points from two group encounters making 1-1 draw against Qatar on Tuesday.

Both Qatar and Bangladesh have secured 1 point each playing one and two matches respectively, but upper ranked Qatar (FIFA World Ranking 98) were in the 3rd slot by virtue of better goal difference to push Bangladesh in the bottom of the group.

In their remaining Group B match, Bangladesh will play another Asian giant Qatar on August 19 at Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi.

After a barren first half in the day’s match, Mahbubur Rahman Sufil put Bangladesh ahead in the 52nd minute by a right-footed placing shot from inside the small box, when a throw-in of defender Bishwanath Ghosh came his way from Tutul Hossain Badsha (1-0).

But Thai substitute forward Chaided Supachai levelled the margin in the 80th minute by a left footer from top of the box to the frustration of Bangladesh tent (1-1).

Meanwhile, Sufil spoiled two more good chances.

Sufil spoiled a good chance in the 8th minute as his weak shot finding Thai custodian alone returned to play hitting the goalkeeper.

He spoiled another chance in the 37th minute when a cross of Bipul Ahmed came his way from opponent custodian, but his shot missed the target from a vintage position.

Bangladesh team: Ashraful Islam Rana, Susanta Tripura, Bishwanath Ghosh, Jamal Bhuiyan, Tutul Hossain Badsha, Topu Barman, Mahbubur Rahman Sufil (Motin Miah), Atiqur Rahman Fahad (Abdullah), Saad Uddin, Masuk Miah Zony and Bipul Ahmed.
